Q&A: How Nigro Construction Keeps Safety Top of Mind on Every Jobsite
Construction Safety Month serves as an important reminder that safety is a mindset that guides every decision on the jobsite.
At Nigro Construction, safety is embedded into every phase of a project, from pre-construction planning through final completion. As Southern Nevada enters the hottest months of the year, our teams are placing an even greater emphasis on heat safety, communication and looking out for one another.
We sat down with Superintendent Jon Halter to discuss how Nigro approaches jobsite safety and what it takes to maintain a strong safety culture across every project.
Is there a particular safety message or theme you're emphasizing with your team?
Jon Halter: "Safety starts with preparation. During the summer months, we structure our workdays around the heat by completing the most strenuous tasks early, increasing access to water and shaded rest areas, and adjusting our schedule. Our crews start at 4:30 a.m. and wrap up between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. to minimize exposure to extreme afternoon temperatures."
Why is it important to reinforce safety practices, even when they're part of the day-to-day?
Jon Halter: "As the general contractor, it's our responsibility to lead by example when it comes to safety. We make sure every crew on site hears the same message every day, creating a consistent safety culture that extends beyond each individual subcontractor's own practices."
How do you help keep safety top of mind throughout a project?
Jon Halter: "Consistency is key. We work hard to maintain the same level of diligence and reinforce the same safety message every day, from the start of the project through final completion."
What role does every team member play in maintaining a safe jobsite?
Jon Halter: "Safety is everyone's responsibility. We encourage every person on site to look out for one another and speak up if they see something that could put someone at risk. Open communication is essential to keeping everyone safe."
Is there anything unique about maintaining safety during the summer months, especially with the heat?
Jon Halter: "During the hotter months, we place an even greater emphasis on heat safety. Extreme temperatures can create a variety of hazards, from heat-related illnesses to overheated tools and equipment that can cause burns. That's why we consistently reinforce these risks and the importance of taking the proper precautions to protect everyone on site."
At Nigro Construction, safety remains a year-round commitment and a shared responsibility across every project, trade and team member. By prioritizing preparation, communication and accountability, we work to ensure every worker returns home safely at the end of the day.
